Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and identify the electroencephalography (EEG) correlates of task conflict.
  • To differentiate neural activity associated with task conflict from response selection conflict.

  • Participants performed single-task blocks involving letter and digit classification to minimize within-block task-set reconfiguration.
  • Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants classified digits presented with letters or neutral symbols.
  • Behavioral responses and EEG data were analyzed to identify neural markers of conflict.

  • Presenting letters alongside digits slowed response times and elicited a posterior negativity in ERPs starting around 350 ms poststimulus.

Conclusions:
