Area of Science:

  • Interventional Radiology
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive surgery for pain relief in vertebral compression fractures.
  • Complications, both asymptomatic and serious, have been reported in existing literature.
  • This study details complications from vertebroplasty at a single institution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize and report complications of vertebroplasty.
  • To analyze data from a single institute's experience with vertebroplasty procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 325 vertebroplasty procedures in 236 patients.
  • Data collected included diagnosis and age at the time of procedure.
  • Detailed review of all identified complications.

Main Results:

  • The thoracolumbar junction was the most common site (51.4%).
  • Overall complication rate was 27% (8% symptomatic), with cement leakage being most common.
  • Neurological complications occurred in 4 cases due to spinal canal leakage and 2 from needle injury.

Conclusions:

  • Vertebroplasty complications are often asymptomatic, but serious neurological injuries are possible.
  • Vertebroplasty is a relatively safe treatment for osteoporotic vertebral fractures.
  • Meticulous technique is crucial to minimize leakage complications.
