Summary

This study compared the translucency of seven composite materials using translucency parameter (TP) and light transmittance (%T). Both methods showed a significant positive correlation, indicating their reliability in assessing dental composite material translucency.

  • Translucency Parameter (TP) was calculated using CIELAB color scale measurements against black and white backgrounds.
  • %T was measured using a spectrometer (380-780 nm).
  • Statistical analysis included two-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, Tukey tests, and Pearson correlation coefficient.
  • Main Results:

    • TP and %T significantly differed by composite material and shade category (p<0.05).
    • Both TP and %T showed significant differences across composite materials within each shade and across shades within each material.
    • %T differences were significant for all materials except Beautifil II and Estelite Sigma Quick.
    • TP and %T demonstrated a significant positive correlation (r=0.626, p<0.05).
    • Strong correlations were observed for individual composite materials (except Estelite Sigma Quick), while moderate correlations were found for shade categories.

    Conclusions:

    • Both TP and %T are reliable methods for evaluating the translucency of dental composite materials.
    • The choice of composite material and shade significantly impacts optical properties.
    • The strong correlation between TP and %T validates their use in material characterization and selection for aesthetic dentistry.
