Appendicitis01:19

Appendicitis

Appendicitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the vermiform appendix, most commonly caused by obstruction of its lumen. The appendix is a narrow, blind-ended pouch that extends from the cecum, making it particularly prone to obstruction. Causes include fecaliths, lymphoid hyperplasia (often after viral infections), parasites, tumors, or foreign bodies. This obstruction initiates a cascade of pathological changes.Luminal Obstruction and Early InflammationAfter obstruction, normal mucosal...

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

Appendicitis-I: Introduction

The appendix, a small, narrow, blind tube extending from the inferior part of the cecum, is widely regarded as a vestigial organ, having lost much of its original function through evolution. Despite its diminished role, the appendix can become inflamed, a condition known as appendicitis.
Etiology: Appendicitis can arise from various causes, primarily rooted in the obstruction of the appendix lumen. Factors contributing to this obstruction include fecal accumulation, lymphoid hyperplasia and, in...

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Borderline para-ovarian cysts (PCs) are uncommon gynecological neoplasms.
  • They typically affect women in their third decade.
  • Diagnosis often occurs incidentally during imaging or surgery.

Observation:

  • This case report details a 38-year-old woman initially suspected of having adnexal torsion of hydrosalpinx.
  • Urgent surgery revealed a borderline para-ovarian cyst, which was successfully removed via cystectomy without rupture.
  • The patient subsequently underwent radical surgery.

Findings:

  • The final pathological diagnosis confirmed a borderline para-ovarian cyst.
  • Papillary projections on the cyst wall are key diagnostic indicators on ultrasound.
  • Differential diagnosis includes simple ovarian cysts, peritoneal inclusion cysts, and hydrosalpinges.

Implications:

  • Borderline PCs require careful differentiation from other adnexal masses using imaging.
  • Surgical management is essential, with options ranging from fertility-sparing procedures to radical surgery.
  • The prognosis for borderline PCs is generally favorable due to early detection and treatment.
