Summary

A significant portion of family physicians lack confidence in pre-licensure vaccine safety studies. Confidence in post-licensure vaccine safety studies is higher and increased over time for both family physicians and pediatricians.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess pediatrician and family physician confidence in pre- and post-licensure vaccine safety studies.
  • To examine changes in this confidence between 2007 and 2010/11.

Main Methods:

  • Nationally representative surveys of pediatricians and family physicians were conducted in 2007 and 2010/11.
  • Response rates for the surveys were 81% in 2007 and 66% in 2010/11.

Main Results:

  • One-third of family physicians reported little or no confidence in pre-licensure vaccine safety studies, compared to one-tenth of pediatricians (p<0.001).
  • Higher percentages of both groups expressed great confidence in post-licensure studies.
  • Confidence in post-licensure studies increased from 2007 to 2010/11 for both specialties.

Conclusions:

  • Most physicians are confident in post-licensure vaccine safety, but a notable percentage of family physicians lack confidence in pre-licensure studies.
  • Further research is needed to explore the reasons for physician distrust in vaccine safety data.
