Background:

  • Serum immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels are significantly lower in secretions compared to blood.
  • The binding capacity of normal serum IgM to secretory component (SC) and its role in this discrepancy are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the reasons for poor transfer of serum IgM into secretions in healthy individuals.
  • To compare the secretory component (SC) binding affinity of normal serum IgM with that of monoclonal IgM.

Main Methods:

  • Studied the mean SC affinity using a polyclonal IgM preparation from 250 normal subjects.
  • Analyzed SC binding with a pool of 100 different monoclonal IgM samples.
  • Determined SC-binding percentages as a function of IgM/SC molar ratio.
