Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is a safe and effective bariatric surgery for older obese patients, leading to significant weight loss and improved comorbidities. Complication rates are acceptable, with low mortality in this demographic.
Area of Science:
- Bariatric Surgery
- Geriatric Medicine
- Obesity Management
Background:
- Global aging populations face increasing obesity-related health risks.
- The role of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in older obese individuals requires further clarification.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the outcomes of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in patients aged 55 years and older.
- To assess perioperative complications, weight loss, comorbidity remission, and revision rates in older obese patients undergoing SG.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 135 patients aged 55+ who underwent SG between 2006-2011.
- Outcomes data extracted from a prospectively held database.
- Subanalysis comparing age groups: 55-59, 60-64, and 65+ years.
Main Results:
- Mean follow-up of 14.6 months with 0% short-term mortality.
- 11.1% 30-day complication rate and 4.4% late complications, with no significant age-related differences.
- Significant comorbidity reduction (except sleep apnea) and excellent weight loss achieved across all age groups.
Conclusions:
- Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is an effective and relatively safe primary treatment for older morbidly obese patients.
- LSG demonstrates acceptable complication rates, significant weight loss, and comorbidity remission in the geriatric obese population.
