Background:

Nurse recruitment and retention is a persistent challenge in Singapore.
Ensuring an adequate supply of registered nurses is crucial for healthcare systems.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the career development experiences and perspectives of recent nursing graduates in Singapore.
To identify factors influencing career progression and satisfaction among new nurses.

Main Methods:

A survey was administered to recent Bachelor of Nursing program graduates in Singapore.
A response rate of 54% was achieved from the 147 surveyed graduates.

Main Results:

Graduates reported high satisfaction with direct patient care but low satisfaction with professional prestige, work hours, and research opportunities.
Key barriers to career development included lack of workplace support, insufficient clinical development opportunities, long work hours, and limited access to further education.
Positive self-concept was noted, alongside satisfaction with patient interaction.

Conclusions:

Implementing broad healthcare system changes is recommended to address career development barriers.
Decreased and more flexible working hours, along with equitable access to further education, are crucial for nurse career progression.
Workplace support and access to development opportunities are vital for nurse retention and job satisfaction, potentially impacting patient care.
