Summary

Anorexia nervosa patients show impaired spatial orientation, with greater subjective vertical deviation towards the body. This suggests multisensory integration issues in the parietal cortex may underlie body distortions in AN.

Background:

  • Body distortions are linked to parietal cortex (PC) dysfunction in anorexia nervosa (AN).
  • The PC is crucial for spatial orientation constancy and integrating sensory information.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate spatial orientation constancy and body orientation perception in AN patients.
  • To investigate the effect of passive body inclination on visual and tactile subjective vertical (SV) and body Z-axis in AN.

Main Methods:

  • 25 AN patients and 25 healthy controls underwent visual and tactile spatial judgments.
  • Judgments were made in upright and tilted (90° clockwise/counterclockwise) positions.
  • The study assessed subjective vertical and body Z-axis perception.

Main Results:

  • A significant deviation of tactile and visual SV towards the body (A-effect) was observed in tilted conditions for AN patients.
  • The AN group showed Z-axis deviation in the direction of body tilt.
  • A greater A-effect in AN patients suggests multisensory spatial orientation impairment.

Conclusions:

  • Spatial reference perception is impaired in anorexia nervosa.
  • Reduced interoceptive awareness and somatosensory input due to weight loss may contribute.
  • Dysfunctional integration of visual, tactile, and gravitational information in the PC is implicated.
