Summary

Laparoscopic surgery is increasingly common among surgical residents, leading to a significant decline in open procedures. While current training meets requirements, future adequacy of open surgical skills is a concern.

  • Average procedures per resident increased for appendectomies, cholecystectomies, hernia repairs, and colectomies.
  • Significant decrease in the percentage of open procedures for these common surgeries between 1997 and 2010.
  • The rise in laparoscopic procedures correlated with a decrease in basic open procedures.

Conclusions:

  • Increasing laparoscopic case numbers correlate with a sharp decline in basic open procedures.
  • Current open procedure numbers meet ACGME requirements but raise concerns for future surgical training adequacy.
  • Monitoring the balance between open and laparoscopic training is crucial for comprehensive surgical competency.
