Genetic variations in catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) genes interact to affect cognitive functions like spatial working memory and planning in schizophrenia patients. Contrary to hypotheses, the MTHFR T-allele appeared to lessen the cognitive impact of COMT Val homozygosity.
