Summary

Fluoroscopically guided balloon dilation is a safe and effective treatment for postintubation tracheal stenosis. While symptoms may recur, repeat procedures and other therapies offer long-term relief for most patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and long-term efficacy of fluoroscopically guided balloon dilation in patients with postintubation tracheal stenosis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 14 patients who underwent fluoroscopically guided balloon dilation for postintubation tracheal stenosis between 2000 and 2010.
  • Assessment of technical success, clinical success, complications, and symptom recurrence during long-term follow-up.

  • The procedure was technically and clinically successful in all patients with no major complications.
  • Initially, 43% of patients remained asymptomatic; 57% experienced recurrence within 6 months.
