Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Rheumatology
  • Immunodermatology

Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease.
  • Neutrophilic dermatoses are inflammatory skin conditions characterized by neutrophil infiltration.

Observation:

  • Three cases of rheumatoid neutrophilic dermatitis (RND) associated with RA are presented.
  • Clinical presentation includes papules and nodules on fingers, forearms, and thighs.
  • Histopathological examination reveals a dense, diffuse dermal neutrophil infiltrate.

Findings:

  • Rheumatoid neutrophilic dermatitis is a distinct entity observed in RA patients.
  • The characteristic histological finding is a significant neutrophilic infiltrate in the dermis.
  • The etiology of the neutrophilic infiltrate in RND is currently unknown.

Implications:

  • This case series expands the understanding of RND as a specific dermatological manifestation of RA.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the pathogenesis of RND.
  • Identifying the cause of neutrophilic infiltration may lead to targeted therapies for RND in RA patients.
