Summary

Pediatric cardiac malignancies are rare, with soft tissue sarcomas being most common. Lymphomas showed longer survival in this rare pediatric cancer population.

Background:

  • Primary cardiac malignancies in children are exceptionally rare.
  • Understanding their characteristics is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the demographics, presentation, and outcomes of pediatric cardiac malignancies.
  • To analyze survival rates based on histology and treatment modalities.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry.
  • Analyzed data for patients under 20 years of age diagnosed with primary cardiac malignancies between 1973 and 2008.

Main Results:

  • Identified 25 pediatric patients with primary cardiac malignancies.
  • Soft tissue sarcoma was the most common histology (40%), followed by lymphoma and teratoma (12% each).
  • Lymphomas demonstrated significantly longer survival compared to other malignancies (p=0.03), and surgical resection was associated with improved survival (p=0.016).

Conclusions:

  • Primary malignant cardiac tumors are rare in pediatric populations.
  • Soft tissue sarcomas are the most frequent type.
  • Lymphomas exhibit better survival outcomes, and surgical intervention improves prognosis.
