Area of Science:

  • Medical Aesthetics
  • Laser Surgery
  • Tissue Engineering

Background:

  • The 1210-nm wavelength exhibits absorption affinity for lipid-rich tissue, stimulating adipocytes and mesenchymal cells via Selective Photothermostimulation (SPS).
  • This wavelength's application in liposuction is based on its ability to preserve adipocyte integrity, enabling fat grafting for various reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.
  • The technique is recognized for being less traumatic compared to traditional methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the 1210-nm diode laser for liposuction with adipocyte preservation.
  • To assess the suitability of aspirated adipose tissue for fat grafting procedures.
  • To determine the impact of the 1210-nm diode laser on subcutaneous cellular tissue and adipocyte viability.

Main Methods:

  • 102 patients with lipodystrophy underwent liposuction using the 1210-nm diode laser (ORlight®).
  • Ultrasound imaging verified the protocol, and intraoperative temperatures were monitored.
  • Histological analysis of aspirated tissue assessed adipocyte and connective tissue preservation, including mitochondrial activity.

Main Results:

  • Histological analysis confirmed 98% preservation of aspirated adipocytes.
  • The 1210-nm diode laser demonstrated affinity for adipose tissue with reduced trauma.
  • Minor complications (2% ecchymosis) were recorded, with a 24-hour recovery period.

Conclusions:

  • The 1210-nm diode laser liposuction (LSDL) is effective in preserving adipocyte viability for fat grafting.
  • The procedure is minimally invasive, suitable for body and facial applications, and offers rapid patient recovery.
  • LSDL 1210-nm is an ideal tool for advanced liposculpture and reconstructive surgery.
