Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Individuals with alcohol and drug addiction face a 5-10 times higher risk of suicide.
  • There is a critical need for effective suicide prevention strategies tailored to this vulnerable population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and evaluate the Preventing Addiction Related Suicide (PARS) module.
  • To assess the impact of the PARS module on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to suicide prevention in individuals with substance use disorders.

Main Methods:

  • Pilot testing of the PARS module with 78 patients.
  • Assessment of changes in knowledge and attitudes immediately post-treatment and at 1-month follow-up.
  • Evaluation of help-seeking behaviors for self and others.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements in suicide prevention knowledge (p = .000) and attitudes (p = .000) were observed post-treatment.
  • These gains in knowledge (p = .000) and attitudes (p = .0001) were maintained at 1-month follow-up.
  • Significant increases in positive help-seeking behaviors for friends (p = .007), family (p = .015), and self (p = .008) were noted.

Conclusions:

  • The PARS module is an effective intervention for enhancing suicide prevention knowledge, attitudes, and help-seeking behaviors in individuals with substance use disorders.
  • The PARS module demonstrated feasibility and positive reception from clinical treatment staff.
  • The findings support the integration of the PARS module into standard clinical practice for improved suicide prevention in at-risk populations.
