The Lenstar and IOLMaster devices show good repeatability for measuring peripheral eye lengths. The Lenstar demonstrated superior repeatability compared to the IOLMaster in this study.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Optics
  • Ophthalmic Instrumentation

Background:

  • Accurate measurement of ocular biometry is crucial for refractive surgery and understanding eye growth.
  • Partial coherence interferometry (PCI) devices are widely used for axial length measurements.
  • Assessing the repeatability and agreement of PCI devices in measuring peripheral eye lengths is important for clinical applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the intrasessional and intersessional repeatability of two commercial PCI instruments: IOLMaster and Lenstar.
  • To compare the agreement between the IOLMaster and Lenstar for measuring central and peripheral eye lengths.

Main Methods:

  • Central and peripheral eye lengths were measured in seven adults using the IOLMaster and Lenstar.

  • Measurements were taken at various points across horizontal (up to 35°) and vertical (up to 30°) visual fields in 5° intervals.
  • Multiple measurements were recorded at each location across two separate sessions.
  • Main Results:

    • Both devices exhibited good intrasessional and intersessional repeatability for peripheral eye length measurements.
    • The Lenstar showed better repeatability (intrasessional SDs: 0.02 ± 0.02 mm; intersessional SDs: ±0.05 mm horizontal, ±0.04 mm vertical) than the IOLMaster (intrasessional SDs: 0.04 ± 0.04 mm; intersessional SDs: ±0.11 mm horizontal, ±0.08 mm vertical).
    • Measurement variability increased with eccentricity from the fixation point.

    Conclusions:

    • Both IOLMaster and Lenstar are reliable for peripheral eye length measurements.
    • Lenstar offers superior repeatability for peripheral eye length measurements compared to IOLMaster.
    • A slight difference in the range of eye lengths measured by the two devices was observed, with Lenstar yielding greater lengths at higher axial lengths.
