Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Urinary bladder leiomyosarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma.
  • Accurate staging is crucial for effective treatment planning.
  • 18F-FDG PET/CT is a standard imaging modality for evaluating other leiomyosarcomas.

Observation:

  • A 28-year-old woman with a history of retinoblastoma presented with fatigue, anemia, and a bladder mass.
  • Abdominal ultrasound and CT identified the mass.
  • Staging 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed an intensely FDG-avid bladder mass.

Findings:

  • Biopsy confirmed the bladder mass as leiomyosarcoma.
  • 18F-FDG PET/CT showed no evidence of metastases.
  • The imaging findings guided the patient's management.

Implications:

  • This case demonstrates the utility of 18F-FDG PET/CT in staging urinary bladder leiomyosarcoma.
  • This represents a novel application of PET/CT for this rare tumor.
  • Enhanced diagnostic capabilities can improve patient outcomes for rare cancers.
