Abstract:
During 1996-2007, a total of 209 new cases of childhood cancer were registered in Guerrero, 67.5% of them were leukemias (39.7%), lymphomas (14.4%), and central nervous system tumors (CNST, 13.4%). The overall incidence 172.2 was the highest of the jurisdictions studied. The highest incidences of leukemias, lymphomas, and neuroblastomas (67.5, 25.0, and 10.6, respectively) were encountered in Guerrero. Germ cell tumors had the lowest incidence (6.4). Children under five years of age had the highest incidence; the male/female ratio was 1.3. The overall incidence of the neoplasias tended to remain stable; only Hodgkin lymphomas showed a tendency to increase (average annual percent change (AAPC): 6.8; CI 95 % = 0.1, 14.0) and only CNST, a trends to decrease (AAPC -11.2, CI 95 % -19.2, -2.0). Of the solid tumors, 72.9 % were diagnosed as either III or IV stage.

Cancer-Critical Genes II: Tumor Suppressor Genes
When the function of certain critical genes, especially those involved in cell cycle regulation and cell growth signaling cascades, gets disrupted, it upsets the cell cycle progression. Such cells with unchecked cell cycles start proliferating uncontrollably and eventually develop into tumors.
