    Summary

A new 1-second initial partial polymerization (IPP) technique for Fuji II LC restorations significantly reduces microleakage compared to standard methods. Using Fuji Coat LC further diminishes microleakage, improving restorative dentistry outcomes.

    Area of Science:

    • Dental Materials Science
    • Restorative Dentistry
    • Polymerization Techniques

    Background:

    • Microleakage remains a significant challenge in dental restorations, potentially leading to secondary caries and pulpal issues.
    • Optimizing light-curing protocols is crucial for achieving durable and well-sealed composite restorations.
    • Fuji II LC is a widely used light-curable glass ionomer, and its handling characteristics can influence marginal integrity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of a novel 1-second initial partial polymerization (IPP) technique for Fuji II LC restorations.
    • To compare the IPP technique against the manufacturer's standard placement protocol concerning microleakage.
    • To assess the additional effect of Fuji Coat LC on microleakage when used with both polymerization techniques.

    Main Methods:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Class V cavities were prepared on 30 human third molars.
    • Fuji II LC restorations were placed using either the standard method or the experimental 1-second IPP technique.
    • Specimens were divided into groups with and without Fuji Coat LC application, subjected to thermocycling, and analyzed for dye penetration to quantify microleakage.

    Main Results:

    • The experimental IPP technique resulted in significantly lower mean microleakage (0.08 mm with varnish, 0.33 mm without) compared to the control (0.17 mm with varnish, 0.58 mm without).
    • Both the IPP technique (p<0.001) and the use of Fuji Coat LC (p<0.001) significantly reduced microleakage.
    • A significant reduction in microleakage was also observed for the combination of the IPP technique and Fuji Coat LC (p=0.013).

    Conclusions:

    • The 1-second initial partial polymerization (IPP) technique for Fuji II LC is effective in significantly reducing marginal microleakage.
    • The application of Fuji Coat LC further enhances the marginal seal of Fuji II LC restorations, regardless of the polymerization technique used.
    • These findings suggest that optimizing polymerization strategies can improve the longevity and clinical performance of glass ionomer restorations.
