Area of Science:

  • Digital mental health
  • Clinical psychology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Pilot randomized controlled trial comparing mobile vs. computer delivery of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for depression.
  • Investigated the efficacy of a validated computerized program (The Sadness Program) via a mobile application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish if the Sadness Program, delivered via mobile app, remains efficacious for treating depression.
  • Compare the effectiveness of mobile app-based CBT versus computer-based CBT.

Main Methods:

  • 35 participants with Major Depression were randomized to mobile app or computer delivery.
  • Intervention involved 6 lessons, homework, and limited email contact from clinicians.
  • Primary outcome measured by Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9); mixed-model repeated-measures ANOVA used for attrition.

Main Results:

  • Both mobile and computer groups showed statistically significant improvements in PHQ-9 scores post-treatment.
  • These significant reductions in depression symptoms were sustained at 3-month follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Mobile app delivery of CBT for depression yields clinically significant improvements.
  • Digital mental health interventions are effective treatment options for depression.
