Anorexia Nervosa01:28

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. It often leads to dangerously low body weight relative to an individual's age and height. This disorder is marked by significant physical and psychological consequences, making it one of the most life-threatening psychiatric illnesses.

Bulimia Nervosa01:30

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...
Disorders of Erythrocytes01:27

Disorders of Erythrocytes

Disorders of erythrocytes, or red blood cells (RBCs), include a range of conditions affecting their number, shape, or function.
Erythrocyte disorders can be broadly categorized into two main types: anemic and polycythemic conditions.
A low oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood due to the loss, lower production, or destruction of erythrocytes is termed anemia. Hemorrhagic anemia, for example, occurs when bleeding from an external wound or internal ulcer reduces erythrocyte counts.
On the other...

Chronic Kidney Disease II: Clinical Manifestations

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) progressively impairs multiple body systems due to the accumulation of uremic toxins, which disrupt cellular functions across various organs.Neurologic symptomsNeurologic symptoms often arise early in CKD, as uremic toxin buildup drives changes in cognitive and motor functions. Patients frequently experience fatigue, headache, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and, in severe cases, seizures. Peripheral neuropathy commonly manifests as burning sensations in the...
Binge Eating Disorders01:23

Binge Eating Disorders

Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...
Disorders of Hemostasis01:24

Disorders of Hemostasis

Hemostasis, the process that stops bleeding after a blood vessel injury, is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the circulatory system. However, disorders of hemostasis can disrupt this delicate balance, leading to either excessive clotting or bleeding. These disorders can be broadly classified into thromboembolic disorders and bleeding disorders.
Thromboembolic Disorders
Two factors primarily cause thromboembolic conditions.

Summary

Severe anorexia nervosa frequently causes hematologic abnormalities like anemia and leukopenia due to starvation. These blood count issues typically resolve with nutritional rehabilitation, reducing the need for unnecessary medical interventions.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Hematologic abnormalities are common in severe anorexia nervosa but not well-documented.
  • Understanding these abnormalities is crucial for medical stabilization and treatment of severe eating disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the prevalence and types of hematologic dysfunction in adults with severe anorexia nervosa.
  • To investigate the resolution of these abnormalities with nutritional rehabilitation.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of medical charts from 53 adult patients with severe anorexia nervosa.
  • Data collected included hematologic parameters (hematocrit, WBC, ANC, platelets) during hospitalization.
  • Patients were admitted for medical stabilization at a national referral center.

Main Results:

  • 83% of patients were anemic, 79% leukopenic, 29% neutropenic, and 25% thrombocytopenic.
  • Only 6% of anemic patients had iron deficiency; neutropenia resolved in 89% by discharge.
  • Low body mass index (nadir 12.4 kg/m²) correlated with hematologic deficiencies.

Conclusions:

  • Marked hematologic deficiencies are common in severe anorexia nervosa, primarily due to starvation.
  • These deficiencies are generally reversible with nutritional rehabilitation.
  • Increased provider awareness can prevent unnecessary diagnostic tests and treatments.
