Hydroxyapatite bone cement (HABC) offers safe and effective ossiculoplasty, improving functional results and preventing extrusion. This study highlights HABC

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Ossiculoplasty aims to restore hearing by reconstructing the middle ear ossicles.
  • Hydroxyapatite bone cement (HABC) is a biocompatible material used in otologic surgery.
  • Evaluating the efficacy and safety of HABC in various ossicular reconstruction scenarios is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the functional outcomes and complications of ossiculoplasty using hydroxyapatite bone cement (HABC).
  • To compare the effectiveness of HABC in different ossicular reconstruction techniques.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 73 ossiculoplasties performed with HABC.
  • Patients were categorized into four groups based on the type of ossicular defect and reconstruction method.

  • Audiological results (air-bone gap) and complications were assessed at a mean follow-up of 21 months.
  • Main Results:

    • Excellent closure of air-bone gap (ABG) < or = 20 dB was achieved in 83-100% of cases across the four groups.
    • Significant hearing improvement (ABG < or = 10 dB) ranged from 50% to 90% depending on the reconstruction type.
    • No complications, including extrusion, were reported with the use of HABC.

    Conclusions:

    • HABC is a safe, easy-to-use material that improves functional hearing results in ossiculoplasty.
    • HABC facilitates stable ossicular chain reconstruction, preserving anatomical and physiological integrity.
    • Reconstruction of the incus long process or incudo-stapedial joint with HABC is preferred over partial ossicular reconstruction.
