A rare finding of elastosis was observed in a middle cranial fossa meningioma. This unusual feature, characterized by elastic material, has an uncertain significance in meningioma tumors.

Area of Science:

  • Neuropathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Meningiomas are the most common primary tumors of the central nervous system.
  • Middle cranial fossa meningiomas represent a significant subset, often requiring surgical intervention.
  • Histological classification is crucial for understanding meningioma behavior.

Observation:

  • A 63-year-old female patient presented with a middle cranial fossa meningioma.
  • Surgical resection via craniotomy was performed.
  • Microscopic examination revealed a transitional and fibroblastic meningioma subtype.

Findings:

  • Uncommon collagenous foci containing eosinophilic masses were identified within the tumor.
  • These masses demonstrated staining properties consistent with elastic material.
  • Elastosis features were confirmed by the disappearance of these components after elastase incubation.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Elastosis is a rare histological finding in meningiomas.
  • The clinical significance of elastosis in meningiomas remains unclear.
  • Further research is needed to determine the prognostic or diagnostic value of this finding.
