Summary

Apathy was not common in cardiovascular disease patients, but linked to depression and heart attack history. Cognitive function was mostly unrelated to apathy in this mild patient group.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of apathy in cardiovascular disease patients.
  • To explore the relationship between apathy and cognitive function in this population.
  • To identify factors associated with apathy in individuals with CVD.

Main Methods:

  • 123 outpatient cardiology clinic participants completed cognitive tests, a cardiac stress test, and self-report measures.
  • Apathy was quantified using the Apathy Evaluation Scale.
  • Depression, medical history, and demographics were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Low levels of apathy and depression were reported in the sample.
  • Apathy correlated significantly with depressive symptoms, heart attack history, and metabolic equivalents.
  • Behavioral apathy linked to executive function; another apathy subscale linked to attention, after adjustments.

Conclusions:

  • Apathy was not prevalent in this sample but showed associations with medical variables.
  • Apathy was generally not associated with cognitive function in this cohort.
  • Future research with severe CVD or cognitive impairment may clarify these relationships.
