Summary

Action planning influences perception, and this effect is modulated by motivation. Higher motivation enhances the link between action preparation and perceptual selection, impacting how we process sensory information.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Perception-Action Coupling

Background:

  • Action planning influences not only action execution but also perceptual processing.
  • The degree to which action planning tunes perception may depend on motivational factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if motivation for action affects the impact of action planning on perceptual selection.
  • To explore the role of motivation and effort in action-related perceptual biases.

Main Methods:

  • Two experiments were conducted, assessing motivation using pupillometry (Experiment 1) and visual analog scales (VAS, Experiment 2).
  • Participants performed search tasks involving different action contexts (grasping vs. pointing).

Main Results:

  • Replication of findings: searching for size-defined targets is more efficient during grasping than pointing.

  • Pupil size changes (indicating motivation/effort) and VAS scores correlated with the action-perception congruency effect.
  • Motivation and effort levels were linked to the degree of action preparation and activation of action codes.
  • Conclusions:

    • Motivation and effort play a significant role in action preparation and the activation of action codes.
    • The extent of action code activation influences action-related biases observed in perception.
