A new web-based program, Coping with Voices, shows promise for increasing access to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp). The study found it feasible and effective in reducing auditory hallucinations and other symptoms in individuals with schizophrenia.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Digital Health
Background:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp) is effective but has limited accessibility in the U.S.
- Auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia cause significant distress and functional impairment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To test the feasibility and preliminary effects of "Coping with Voices," a web-based CBTp program.
- To assess participant satisfaction and engagement with the digital intervention.
Main Methods:
- An open pilot study involving 21 individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and auditory hallucinations.
- Participants completed a 10-session, self-directed, computerized program.
- Feasibility was assessed by session completion rates; effects were measured by pre- and post-treatment symptom assessments.
Main Results:
- High participant satisfaction and engagement were reported.
- 81% of participants completed at least 6 sessions.
- Significant reductions were observed in auditory hallucination severity, distress, and other psychotic symptoms post-treatment.
Conclusions:
- The web-based "Coping with Voices" program is feasible and demonstrates potential clinical benefits for individuals with schizophrenia experiencing auditory hallucinations.
- Further rigorous research is warranted to confirm these findings and evaluate long-term efficacy.
