Gynecologic oncology·2026

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Gynecologic Oncology

Background:

  • Sentinel lymph node (SLN) surgery identifies cancer spread to the first lymph node.
  • This technique is effective across various cancer types.
  • Its application in ovarian cancer requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of SLN biopsy in ovarian cancer patients.
  • To determine if tracers injected into ovarian ligaments can identify SLNs.
  • To assess the efficacy of SLN identification in this specific patient group.

Main Methods:

  • The study included patients with suspected ovarian malignancy or endometrial cancer.
  • Blue dye and radioactive colloid were injected into the ovarian ligaments (ligamentum ovarii proprium and ligamentum infundibulo-pelvicum).

  • Feasibility of SLN identification, anatomical location, and false negative rates were analyzed.
  • Main Results:

    • The study aimed to calculate the percentage of patients where SLNs could be identified.
    • It also focused on the anatomical localization of identified SLNs.
    • The incidence of false negative lymph nodes was another key parameter.

    Conclusions:

    • The study's findings will determine the viability of SLN biopsy for ovarian cancer staging via ovarian ligament tracer injection.
    • Results will inform potential improvements in surgical staging for gynecologic malignancies.
    • This research contributes to the understanding of SLN mapping in ovarian cancer.
