Area of Science:

  • Pediatric medicine
  • Developmental psychology
  • Educational psychology

Context:

  • Preventive medical examinations for school beginners are conducted up to two years prior to enrollment.
  • The HASE (Hامتag-Sprach-Entwicklungs-Screening) is utilized in Baden-Württemberg for screening language and literacy acquisition risks.
  • Existing norms for the HASE screening were insufficient for the 4;0-4;5 year age group.

Purpose:

  • To address the insufficiency of existing norms for the HASE screening in the 4;0-4;5 year age group.
  • To recalculate and provide updated norms for this specific age cohort.
  • To enhance the accuracy and reliability of early risk detection for language and literacy development.

Summary:

  • Norms for the HASE screening tool were recalculated for children aged 4;0-4;5 years, based on data from 3,354 participants.

  • The updated norms are now available in percentile ranks, T-scores, and C-scores.
  • This recalculation provides a more accurate assessment of language and literacy acquisition risks for this age group.
  • Impact:

    • Improved early identification of potential learning and language acquisition difficulties in preschool children.
    • Enhanced ability for educators and healthcare professionals to intervene effectively.
    • Supports evidence-based practices in early childhood education and developmental screening.
