Background:

  • Patients with chronic conditions possess unique expertise valuable for interprofessional education.
  • Current patient involvement in educational design and delivery is minimal.
  • A theoretical model for patient-centred learning involving patients and students exists but lacks practical implementation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify challenges and outcomes associated with creating an educational intervention designed and delivered by patients.
  • To evaluate the feasibility and impact of patient-led educational initiatives.

Main Methods:

  • An advisory group guided the development of interprofessional workshops.
  • Community educators (CEs) with lived experience were recruited.
  • Workshops were planned by diverse stakeholders and delivered by CEs, with evaluation via student questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • Workshops were delivered by CEs experienced in epilepsy, arthritis, HIV/AIDS, and mental health conditions.
  • CEs maintained control over planning and delivery, with identified roles and responsibilities.
  • Ten workshops were highly rated by 142 students from 15 disciplines, closely aligning objectives and learning with patient-centredness.

Conclusions:

  • The study demonstrates the feasibility of an educational intervention led by patient educators.
  • Faculty facilitation, without direct control, is effective in supporting patient-led education.
  • This approach positively impacts patient-centred learning in health professions education.
