Summary

Upper extremity arterial reconstruction for chronic ischemia is a rare but safe procedure. This study found excellent 30-day outcomes with no perioperative deaths or graft failures.

  • Surgical reconstruction aims to restore blood flow and alleviate symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the outcomes of upper extremity arterial reconstruction for chronic ischemia.
  • To analyze patient demographics, diagnoses, and procedures performed.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database.
  • Identified patients who underwent upper extremity bypass for chronic ischemia (2005-2007).

Main Results:

  • 55 patients (71% female, mean age 57) were analyzed.
  • Common diagnoses included prior arterial thromboembolism and atherosclerotic disease.
  • Axillo-brachial, brachial-brachial, and carotid-brachial bypasses were most frequent.
  • No perioperative deaths or acute graft failures were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Upper extremity bypass is a safe procedure with excellent short-term results.
  • Indications for upper extremity bypass differ from lower extremity bypass.
