Summary

Mortality after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is rare but can occur due to complications like sepsis. This study reports a case and suggests the mortality rate is similar to standard shoulder arthroplasty.

Background:

The mortality rate following total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is not well-documented.
Fatalities specifically linked to reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) complications are previously unreported.

Observation:

A case report details an elderly patient experiencing shoulder instability post-RTSA.
The patient underwent revision surgery for glenosphere dissociation, subsequently developing a shoulder infection and sepsis.
The patient died from complications arising from sepsis.

Findings:

This case represents a perioperative mortality of 0.5% in a series of 190 RTSA cases.
The observed mortality rate in RTSA appears comparable to that of standard TSA.

Implications:

Highlights the potential for severe, life-threatening complications following RTSA.
Suggests a need for vigilance regarding infection and sepsis post-RTSA revision.
Contributes data to the understanding of RTSA safety profile and perioperative risks.
