Summary

Michigan's work-related amputation surveillance system identified over double the amputations compared to previous estimates. This system aids in hazard mitigation and workplace safety investigations to reduce serious injuries.

Data from Michigan hospital records (2008) and workers' compensation claims were analyzed.
High-risk industry incidents were referred to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA).

616 work-related amputations occurred in Michigan (13.6/100,000 workers).
