Summary

This retrospective study analyzed 608 permanent pacemaker implants over 8 years. Pacemaker patients, often elderly males with atherosclerosis, primarily experienced syncope and complete AV block, with low mortality from pacemaker complications.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Medical Device Technology
  • Clinical Research

Context:

  • Retrospective analysis of 608 permanent pacemaker implantations over an 8-year period.
  • Demographic data indicate a higher prevalence in males (56.5%) and individuals over 60 years old (77.5%).
  • Atherosclerosis identified as the predominant comorbidity in 50% of the patient cohort.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate clinical, laboratory, and electrocardiographic data in patients with permanent pacemakers.
  • To identify common indications, complications, and outcomes associated with pacemaker implantation.

Summary:

  • Syncope was the most frequent clinical presentation (96.2%), with complete atrioventricular (AV) block being the most common electrocardiographic finding (50.5%).
  • Early complication: electrode displacement in 5.2% of patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Late complication: generator site infection in 10.3% of patients.
  • Overall mortality was 7.7%, primarily attributed to underlying cardiac disease rather than pacemaker-related issues.
  • Impact:

    • Provides insights into the long-term outcomes and complication profile of permanent pacemaker use.
    • Highlights the importance of monitoring for specific complications like electrode displacement and infection.
    • Informs clinical decision-making regarding pacemaker selection and patient management strategies.
