Background:

Escape Theory posits that self-blame for failure heightens implicit suicidal ideation.
Understanding the cognitive underpinnings of suicidal thoughts is crucial for developing targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the link between self-blame, failure priming, and implicit suicidal ideation.
To examine the moderating role of locus of control on this relationship.

Main Methods:

138 undergraduate medical students were randomly assigned to failure priming, success priming, or control conditions.
Participants completed a death/suicide Implicit Association Test (IAT) post-priming.
Locus of control (LOC) was assessed as a potential moderator.

Main Results:

Significant differences in implicit suicidal mind accessibility were found across priming groups.
Priming effects on implicit suicidal ideation were significant for individuals with internal LOC.
These priming effects were not observed in individuals with external LOC.

Conclusions:

Failure-related self-blame can increase implicit suicidal thoughts, supporting Escape Theory.
Locus of control significantly moderates the impact of failure priming on implicit suicidal ideation.
Interventions may need to consider individual differences in LOC when addressing self-blame and suicidal ideation.
