Summary

A lead drape significantly reduces operator radiation exposure during transradial cardiac procedures. The left radial approach did not increase operator radiation exposure compared to the right approach.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Interventional Cardiology
  • Radiation Safety

Background:

  • Transradial access is preferred for cardiac procedures due to fewer complications and better patient comfort.
  • Concerns exist regarding increased radiation exposure for operators during transradial interventions.
  • This study investigated the efficacy of a lead drape in reducing operator radiation exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a lead drape in reducing operator radiation exposure during transradial cardiac catheterization.
  • To compare radiation exposure between left and right radial approaches.
  • To assess the impact of enhanced shielding on operator radiation dose.

Main Methods:

  • Patients undergoing transradial procedures were randomized to standard or enhanced shielding with a lead drape.
  • Operator radiation exposure was measured using dosimeters on the wrist and thyroid guard.
  • Exposure was compared between enhanced and standard shielding groups for both left and right radial access.

Main Results:

  • Enhanced shielding with a lead drape reduced operator radiation exposure at most measured sites.
  • No significant difference in exposure was observed between left and right radial approaches with standard shielding.
  • No significant differences in fluoroscopy, air kerma, or dose area product were found between shielding groups.

Conclusions:

  • A simple lead drape effectively reduces operator radiation exposure in transradial procedures.
  • The left radial approach is not associated with increased operator radiation exposure compared to the right approach.
  • Enhanced shielding is a valuable strategy for improving operator safety in interventional cardiology.
