Background:

  • Implementation of alcohol-based hand rub (AHR) dispensers in operating theatre anterooms followed a facility move in 2008.
  • Routine educational sessions promoted AHR as the preferred method for surgical hand disinfection (SHD).
  • Tertiary care hospital in Madrid, Spain, initiated AHR use to enhance infection control protocols.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate surgeons' and operating room nurses' (ORNs) knowledge regarding SHD.
  • To assess the performance of SHD methods, specifically AHR versus antiseptic soap hand scrub (ASHS).
  • To investigate perceptions of AHR and ASHS use among surgical and nursing staff.

Main Methods:

  • An anonymous survey was distributed to surgeons, resident surgeons, and ORNs performing SHD.
  • Survey data collected included knowledge, performance, and perceptions of AHR and ASHS.
  • Statistical analysis, including odds ratios and confidence intervals, was used to compare outcomes.

  • Perceptions and behaviors regarding SHD can be modified, with AHR demonstrating better adherence.
  • AHR offers advantages in terms of drying speed and skin condition compared to ASHS, especially for ORNs.
