Appendicitis01:19

Appendicitis

Appendicitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the vermiform appendix, most commonly caused by obstruction of its lumen. The appendix is a narrow, blind-ended pouch that extends from the cecum, making it particularly prone to obstruction. Causes include fecaliths, lymphoid hyperplasia (often after viral infections), parasites, tumors, or foreign bodies. This obstruction initiates a cascade of pathological changes.Luminal Obstruction and Early InflammationAfter obstruction, normal mucosal...
Cholecystitis01:20

Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, most commonly caused by obstruction of the cystic duct. This blockage prevents bile from draining, leading to gallbladder distension, inflammation, and potentially serious complications. This condition may present acutely or chronically and can happen with or without gallstones.EtiologyAbout 95% of cholecystitis cases are calculous, caused by gallstones blocking the cystic duct, leading to bile accumulation and inflammation of the gallbladder...

Summary

Primary splenic cysts are rare epithelial cysts, often asymptomatic. This case highlights a symptomatic splenic epithelial cyst in a young male, diagnosed via imaging and confirmed by histology after splenectomy.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Primary splenic cysts are rare, with epithelial cysts being the most common type, accounting for approximately 10% of benign non-parasitic cysts.
  • Most splenic cysts are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally during abdominal imaging like ultrasonography.

Observation:

  • A 20-year-old male presented with a year-long history of mild abdominal pain and left upper quadrant fullness.
  • Imaging studies, including ultrasound and computed tomography (CT), indicated the presence of a splenic cyst.
  • Serological tests ruled out parasitic infections.

Findings:

  • Splenectomy was performed, and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a splenic epithelial cyst.
  • The findings align with the classification of primary splenic cysts as a rare entity.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of considering splenic epithelial cysts in the differential diagnosis of symptomatic abdominal masses, even in young individuals.
  • Accurate diagnosis through imaging and histopathology is crucial for appropriate management of splenic cysts.
