Summary

The Child's Challenging Behaviour Scale (CCBS) was revised using Rasch analysis, resulting in a 9-item, 4-point scale (CCBS Version 2) with improved psychometric properties for assessing challenging behaviors in children with disabilities.

Background:

The Child's Challenging Behaviour Scale (CCBS) measures maternal ratings of child behavior.
Previously validated using classical test theory for school-aged children with developmental disabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the CCBS using Rasch analysis.
To assess response format, item fit, dimensionality, and targeting of the CCBS scale.

Main Methods:

Rasch analysis was performed on data from 152 mothers of school-aged children (5-18 years) with disabilities.
The RUMM2030 package was utilized for the Rasch analysis of the 11-item CCBS.

Main Results:

Initial Rasch analysis indicated threshold disordering in 9 items, problematic for the 5-point response format.
Modifications included removing the neutral midpoint (creating a 4-point scale) and two items due to local dependency.
The revised 9-item CCBS Version 2 demonstrated unidimensionality, good targeting, Rasch model fit, and strong internal consistency.

Conclusions:

Two modifications to the CCBS were necessary to achieve Rasch model fit.
The revised 9-item CCBS with a 4-point response format exhibits excellent psychometric properties.
The updated scale supports enhanced internal validity for measuring challenging behaviors.
