Summary

Intratendinous flexor tendon ruptures are rare, especially in nonrheumatoid patients. Scaphoid nonunion can cause these ruptures, mimicking nerve issues, but power pinch function can be restored.

Area of Science:

  • Hand and wrist surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Tendon injuries

Background:

  • Intratendinous ruptures of flexor tendons in the hand and wrist are uncommon.
  • These injuries are typically associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Observation:

  • A case of flexor pollicis longus and index flexor digitorum profundus tendon rupture occurred in a 48-year-old man without rheumatoid arthritis.
  • The patient had an asymptomatic scaphoid nonunion, a rare underlying cause for this type of tendon rupture.

Findings:

  • The tendon ruptures simulated symptoms of anterior interosseous nerve syndrome.
  • The study highlights that tendon rupture can occur secondary to scaphoid nonunion even without prior symptoms.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case underscores the importance of considering scaphoid nonunion in the differential diagnosis of flexor tendon injuries.
  • Successful surgical restoration of power pinch function is achievable despite limited range of motion, offering good functional outcomes.
