Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Aortic Surgery

Background:

  • Aortic root disease requires surgical correction.
  • The button Bentall procedure is a complex aortic root replacement technique.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term outcomes of the button Bentall procedure.
  • Assess survival and complications following aortic root repair.

Main Methods:

  • 195 patients with aortic root disease underwent the button Bentall procedure (1997-2010).
  • Annuloaortic ectasia was the primary pathology.
  • Mechanical valves were used in 83.6% of cases, with a median follow-up of 64 months.

Main Results:

  • Operative mortality was 2.6%, with late overall mortality at 7.9%.

  • Actuarial survival rates were 95.8% at 5 years, 89.6% at 10 years, and 75.9% at 15 years.
  • Embolism and bleeding were identified as key risk factors for late mortality.
  • Conclusions:

    • Valve-related morbidities, including embolism and bleeding, are critical determinants of long-term mortality after button Bentall operation.
    • Outcomes are comparable to those seen in standard valve surgery, emphasizing complication management.
