Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Optical Engineering
  • Photonics

Background:

  • Microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) offer unique light-guiding properties.
  • All-solid MOFs are desirable for their robustness and ease of handling.
  • Tellurite glasses present advantages for infrared applications due to their high refractive index and low phonon energy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose and fabricate a novel all-solid tellurite microstructured optical fiber (MOF).
  • To investigate the light-guiding properties of the proposed tellurite MOF, particularly for near- and mid-infrared transmission.
  • To demonstrate the potential of this fiber for applications where conventional silica MOFs are limited.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of an all-solid tellurite MOF with a single layer of high-index rods in the cladding.

  • Characterization of the optical properties of the fabricated fiber.
  • Analysis of the light-guiding mechanism using the ARROW (Anti-Resonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide) model.
  • Main Results:

    • The fabricated tellurite MOF consists of a TeO(2)-ZnO-Na(2)O-La(2)O(3) glass core and cladding, with TeO(2)-Li(2)O-WO(3)-MoO(3)-Nb(2)O(5) glass for high-index rods.
    • The fiber supports near- and mid-infrared light transmission within specific transmission bands.
    • Light is guided in the core within the transmission bands and in the six high-index rods when pump light is outside these bands.

    Conclusions:

    • A simple, all-solid tellurite MOF has been successfully proposed and fabricated.
    • The ARROW model effectively explains the guiding regime of this novel optical fiber.
    • This tellurite MOF demonstrates superior performance for near- and mid-infrared light transmission compared to all-solid silica MOFs.
