Behavioral scientists can now create internet-based behavior change interventions using LifeGuide software. While users recognize its potential for flexible, low-cost development, some require new skills and programmer input.
Area of Science:
- Behavioral Science
- Health Informatics
- Human-Computer Interaction
Background:
- Behavioral scientists traditionally require computer scientists to develop internet-based behavior change interventions.
- The LifeGuide software was developed to empower behavioral researchers to independently create and adapt these interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore users' experiences with the LifeGuide software.
- To understand perceptions of the benefits and limitations of using LifeGuide for intervention development.
Main Methods:
- A qualitative case study was conducted.
- Semi-structured interviews were held with twenty LifeGuide users.
- Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview data.
Main Results:
- Users recognized LifeGuide's potential for flexible, cost-effective intervention development.
- Lack of programming experience presented a learning curve, with varying user confidence in independent development.
- A community website was seen as valuable for sharing support and intervention components.
Conclusions:
- LifeGuide offers significant potential for behavioral researchers to develop internet-based interventions.
- Addressing the skills gap and fostering knowledge sharing are key to maximizing LifeGuide's utility.
- Further development should focus on community support to enhance user independence.
