Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Allergy and Immunology

Background:

  • Chronic sinusitis in children often requires surgical intervention when medical management fails.
  • Underlying conditions like asthma, allergies, immune deficiencies, and cystic fibrosis are common in pediatric patients with chronic sinusitis.
  • Endoscopic ethmoidectomy is a surgical option for managing pediatric chronic sinusitis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of endoscopic ethmoidectomy in children with chronic sinusitis.
  • To assess postoperative outcomes and complication rates in this pediatric population.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study involving 168 pediatric patients evaluated for chronic sinusitis.
  • 31 patients, all medical management failures, underwent endoscopic ethmoidectomy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients were followed for at least 1 year postoperatively.
  • Main Results:

    • The overall complication rate was low, with only minor middle meatal scarring in two patients.
    • 71% of patients were considered symptom-free by their parents one year after surgery.
    • Among patients without underlying systemic disease, 80% had normal outcomes; 7 children with systemic disease required revision surgery.

    Conclusions:

    • Endoscopic ethmoidectomy is a safe procedure for pediatric chronic sinusitis with a high success rate.
    • Outcomes are favorable, particularly in children without underlying systemic conditions.
    • Further research may be warranted to optimize outcomes in children with comorbidities.
