Summary

The oculomotor system adapts saccade accuracy primarily based on target displacement, not background motion. Target selection is crucial for effective saccade adaptation, even with complex natural backgrounds.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Ophthalmology
  • Vision Science

Background:

  • The oculomotor system corrects inaccurate saccades through adaptation.
  • Understanding factors influencing saccade adaptation is key to visual-motor control.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the roles of background and target displacement in saccade adaptation.
  • To determine the relative contributions of visual scene elements to oculomotor adjustments.

Main Methods:

  • Four experiments were conducted using natural image scenes.
  • Target and background displacements were masked during saccades to prevent motion signal detection.
  • Saccade gain adjustments were measured in response to controlled displacements.

Main Results:

  • Background displacement did not influence saccade gain.
  • Target displacement was the primary driver of saccade gain changes.
  • Adaptation occurred with background displacement only when the target was masked post-saccade.

Conclusions:

  • Target selection is critical for effective saccade adaptation.
  • The oculomotor system prioritizes target information for saccade accuracy adjustments.
  • Saccade adaptation functions effectively against natural image backgrounds, driven by target cues.
