Area of Science:

  • Biotechnology and Immunology
  • Pharmacology of Biological Response Modifiers

Context:

  • Factor AF2 is a biotechnologically produced extract from sheep embryo and lamb spleen and liver.
  • It contains standardized polypeptides, glycopeptides, glycolipids, and nucleotides, free of pyrogens.

Purpose:

  • Intended for supportive antitumour therapy.
  • Utilized as a biological antiemetic and analgesic.
  • Aims to act as a biological response modifier (BRM).

Summary:

  • Treatment duration typically exceeds six months with variable dosage and costs.
  • Reported rare cases of allergic reactions.
  • No preclinical data demonstrate cytostatic effects; in vivo studies on meth-A-sarcoma in mice showed no observed effects.
