Cerebral Hemispheres01:05

Cerebral Hemispheres

The human brain, a complex organ, is functionally divided into two cerebral hemispheres—left and right. These hemispheres are interconnected by a structure of paramount importance, the corpus callosum. This substantial bundle of neural fibers is not just a bridge between the hemispheres but a crucial element for the brain's comprehensive functioning. It enables efficient communication between the two hemispheres, allowing each side of the brain to control and receive sensory and motor...
Neurulation01:30

Neurulation

Neurulation is the embryological process which forms the precursors of the central nervous system and occurs after gastrulation has established the three primary cell layers of the embryo: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. In humans, the majority of this system is formed via primary neurulation, in which the central portion of the ectoderm—originally appearing as a flat sheet of cells—folds upwards and inwards, sealing off to form a hollow neural tube. As development proceeds, the anterior...

Summary

Neonatal brain structural connectivity shows left hemisphere efficiency for motor and language functions, while the right is efficient for emotions. This early asymmetry suggests lateralized brain functions from infancy.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Developmental Neuroscience
  • Brain Imaging

Background:

  • Neonatal brain structural connectivity asymmetry remains poorly understood.
  • Investigating early brain development is crucial for understanding functional lateralization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To map structural connectivity asymmetry in the neonatal brain.
  • To analyze the topological properties of neonatal brain networks.

Main Methods:

  • Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) deterministic tractography was used.
  • Structural network analysis with graph theory was applied to 124 neonates.
  • Interregional white matter connections and hemispheric network properties were inferred.

Main Results:

  • Neonatal brains exhibit small-world network characteristics, consistent across both hemispheres.
  • The left hemisphere demonstrates greater structural network efficiency compared to the right hemisphere.
  • Specific functional regions (motor, language, memory in left; emotional in right) contribute to this hemispheric efficiency.

Conclusions:

  • The neonatal brain exhibits an organized and efficient topology at birth.
  • This early structural asymmetry correlates with known adult functional lateralization.
  • Findings imply the presence of lateralized brain functions in infancy.
