Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the relationship between existing clinical pharmacy services in a practice-based research network (PBRN) and healthcare provider attitudes.
  • To evaluate provider beliefs regarding the implementation of a new pharmacy intervention using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB).

Main Methods:

  • Validated surveys were used to assess current clinical pharmacy services and provider beliefs (using TPB instruments) for hypertension and asthma interventions.
  • Surveys were administered to physicians and pharmacists across 32 primary care offices in the United States.
  • Data analysis included Cronbach's alpha for reliability and multivariate analysis to compare scores.

Main Results:

  • A total of 321 physician surveys and 40 pharmacist surveys were returned.
  • No statistically significant correlation was found between the level of existing clinical pharmacy services and provider attitudes or beliefs (TPB scores).
  • Pharmacists reported significantly more positive attitudes towards implementing the interventions compared to physicians in both hypertension and asthma groups.

Conclusions:

  • Pharmacists perceived the implementation of new hypertension or asthma interventions as more straightforward than physicians, irrespective of existing clinical pharmacy services.
  • The study did not find a significant correlation between the extent of clinical pharmacy services and provider attitudes toward future collaborative interventions.
  • Further research is recommended to explore the predictive validity of the TPB instrument in settings with no prior exposure to clinical pharmacy services.
