Ascites01:19

Ascites

DefinitionAscites is the buildup of fluid inside the peritoneal cavity. It occurs when fluid moves out of the vascular system faster than the peritoneal lymphatics can remove it. This fluid shift is most commonly seen in liver cirrhosis but can also appear in several other systemic disorders.EtiologyCirrhosis remains the leading cause of ascites. Other conditions that can contribute include:Heart failureConstrictive pericarditisAbdominal cancersNephrotic syndromeSevere protein–calorie...

Cirrhosis I: Introduction

Cirrhosis is a chronic, irreversible liver disease characterized by the widespread replacement of healthy liver tissue with fibrotic scar tissue and the formation of regenerative nodules.Etiology of cirrhosisCirrhosis results from sustained liver injury that triggers progressive fibrosis and structural remodeling. The underlying causes are diverse, encompassing common and less frequent clinical conditions. Regardless of the origin, all causes lead to chronic inflammation, hepatocyte loss, and...
Abdominal Regions and Quadrants01:19

Abdominal Regions and Quadrants

To promote clear communication, for instance, about the location of a patient's abdominal pain or a suspicious mass, anatomists and clinicians typically use imaginary lines to categorize the abdominopelvic cavity into either four quadrants or nine regions to identify organs in the cavity.
The simpler quadrants approach, which is more commonly used in medicine, subdivides the cavity with one horizontal and one vertical line that intersects at the patient's umbilicus (navel). The four quadrants...

Testes: Gross Anatomy

The testes, also known as testicles, are the male gonads. They are housed within the scrotum, a sac-like structure located beneath the penis. The scrotum's primary role is to regulate the temperature of the testes, which is crucial for sperm production.
Each testis is surrounded by the tunica albuginea, a dense connective tissue layer that provides structural support and protection. This layer is covered by an outer serous membrane called the tunica vaginalis, which helps reduce friction...
Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra. Symptoms...

Summary

A 35-year-old male presented with a scrotal worm infestation, a rare complication following inguinal hernia surgery. Multiple adult Ascaris worms were successfully removed from the scrotum, resolving the painful condition.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Parasitology
  • Surgical Case Reports

Background:

  • Scrotal masses can present with varied etiologies, including parasitic infections.
  • Inguinal hernia repair is a common surgical procedure, but complications, though rare, can occur.

Observation:

  • A 35-year-old male experienced acute scrotal pain with a visible worm emerging from the scrotum.
  • The patient had a history of right strangulated inguinal hernia repair two years prior.

Findings:

  • Surgical exploration revealed multiple adult Ascaris lumbricoides worms within the scrotum.
  • A co-existing right-sided hydrocele was identified during the exploration.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for ectopic Ascaris migration to the scrotum post-hernia surgery.

  • Prompt surgical intervention is crucial for managing such rare parasitic scrotal infestations.
  • Awareness of unusual parasitic presentations is important for clinicians managing scrotal pathology.
