Implanting myopic intraocular lenses (IOLs) in the anterior chamber did not improve uncorrected vision for high myopia patients. However, a slight correction, particularly for astigmatism, led to a 0.2 gain in visual acuity.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Refractive Surgery

Context:

  • High myopia presents significant visual challenges.
  • Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is a surgical option.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of anterior chamber myopic IOL implantation in high myopia.

Summary:

  • 28 patients with high myopia (over -10 diopters) received anterior chamber myopic IOLs.
  • Postoperatively, uncorrected visual acuity remained unchanged at 3 months.
  • A minor correction, especially for residual astigmatism, resulted in a 0.2 improvement in visual acuity.

Impact:

  • Suggests limited benefit of this specific IOL type for uncorrected vision in high myopia.
  • Highlights the potential for visual gain with targeted correction post-implantation.
